From Ethanol to Innovation - How Eco-Energy and the Nashville Ag Club Are Powering the Future

In this episode of Dirt and Bull, we sat down with Eco-Energy CEO Craig Willis and Senior Advisor Paul Willard to talk about the booming ag and energy scene in Middle Tennessee. From building careers at ADM to growing Eco into a major player in renewable fuels and natural gas, both Craig and Paul bring decades of industry experience—and a whole lot of stories. Their passion for business, agriculture, and energy transition is palpable, and it’s making a serious impact here in Nashville.

One standout topic: the rise of the Nashville Ag Club. What started as a dinner among ex-ADM colleagues has grown into a vibrant and diverse community of ag professionals, energy experts, startups, and even state officials. Unlike traditional ag groups, this one’s all about action—real networking, real partnerships, and a business-first mindset. As Paul puts it, “We’re not just meeting to meet—we’re doing deals.”

Eco-Energy itself is leaning hard into innovation. From marketing over 1.5 billion gallons of ethanol annually to launching a new carbon-reduction certificate called TURC (Transportation Emission Reduction Certificate), the company is betting big on the voluntary carbon market and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Add in their growing solar and natural gas businesses, and you’ve got a company that’s quietly become one of Nashville’s largest private enterprises—flying under the radar but making major moves.

Beyond the tech and strategy, Craig and Paul emphasize company culture. “We’re very intentional about having fun,” says Craig. Whether it’s a cutout of DJ Khaled on the trading floor or reconnecting with industry friends like Hagan Rose, the Eco team knows how to blend sharp business with good energy. If you’re in ag, energy, or just curious about where the future is headed, this episode is packed with insights—and maybe a few laughs too.
